Free style Karate in Ireland shotokan's origins comes from the earliest days in Irish karate thanks to John Mc Grane ( Judan10th dan) an early JKA blackbelt pioneer.

Though having great regard for the aspects of traditional Martial arts, respect and discipline, sensei Mc Grane was not afraid to look at the modern developments of "full Contact" training and his fighters won more than their fair share of competitions including world Champions.

Who is Who in Irish Martial arts?

John Mc Grane came into contact with  Brendan Donnelly  in 1982 when he was running a successful Kick-boxing club in Drogheda. Brendan had already trained in other Martial Arts and was experimenting in order to produce a good self defence system. Despite his busy schedule he became interested in Shotokan under the tutelage of sensei Mc Grane and rose through the ranks of Dan grades.Over the years a great deal of co-operation and respect has bound the two together and just as John saw the benefits in full contact practice, so he began to appreciate what the Brendan were trying to develop.
